In 1993, a organization known as the European Community was reorganized to form the European Union. With the addition of Romania and Bulgaria in 2007, the European Union now has twenty-seven member countries. With approximately 500 million people, the European Union is the largest political and economic entity on the European continent. The European Union was the recipient of the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize for having "contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe."

The European Union has a flag, which is a circle of twelve gold stars on a blue background. The circle of gold stars represents solidarity and harmony and the twelve stars represent perfection, completeness and unity.

The European Union has a currency, called the euro, which is used in Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia and Finland.
