The Great Seal of the United States designed by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson was approved by Congress on June 20, 1782.

The 13 stars, 13 olives and 13 leaves represent the the first thirteen states.

The official custodian of the Great Seal is the Secretary of State.
